About Leaf and Thread

Laura Veleff of Leaf and Thread ceramics in her Melbourne studio

Leaf and Thread handmade ceramic pots reflect a deep affection for the natural world and bring a sense of wellbeing and quiet enjoyment to our inside spaces. Leaf and Thread pots are all hand made by Laura Veleff in her studio in Central Victoria where she throws, trims, glazes and fires her work.

A lover of plants and domestic traditions of folk art and crafts, Laura was naturally drawn to pottery and making functional wares for the home.

Laura's glazes are suggestive of natural environments, reminiscent of subtle shifts in the landscape. Forms are soft and simple but also imbued with a solidity that reflects their natural origins.

Leaf and Thread is mindful of its role as a product maker and as such makes environmentally conscious choices about materials, where they come from and how they are made. Stoneware and terracotta clay is dug straight from the South Australian ground, involving minimal production processes. Practices are in place to minimise transportation, and all clay waste is recycled and re-used in the studio. All fibre used for hanging planters is high-quality linen and cotton weaver's thread made by an eco-label of the Swedish Nature Conservation Society. All brass elements used for Hanging Planters are sourced from Victorian distributors and shaped in-house. Laura sources her packaging materials from local retailers' packaging and newspaper waste and has introduced a recycle pack machine that turns waste cardboard into a fully recyclable perforated paper wrap to replace the need for plastic bubble wrap to protect vessels in transit.
